[A day, a job] Interview of Haythem KAMOUN, Data Engineering Manager

Let us meet Haythem Kamoun, who has engineering running through his veins ! Dancer, actor and engineer, this data devotee handles workflows and processes to optimize the flow of information. Find out more about him and his fast evolving job !

Haythem Kamoun
How did you get into the engineering sphere? What is so passionate about it ?

My interest was born when my brother headed toward this field, then I followed the same path. I went to l’École Centrale in Nantes to study engineering. There I passed a Master’s Degree in Applied Mechanical Sciences, specialized in composite materials and structures.

When did you enter the Orinox team? What have you done ever since ?

Our history started about 3 years ago with me being a design engineer: it was actually my first position. In 2018, I became an Account Technical Lead for TechnipFMC, one of our clients. I have been a Methods and Data Engineer for that same client for 6 months now.

What function and role do you play for Orinox ?

On behalf of Orinox, I work at Technip with a 10-person team based both in Paris and Lyon and my role consists in improving the numerical dimension. I belong to the Information Management department, as part of it, we deal with the workflows and processes a company has, then we work out a logic to all these engineering data. While creating automatisms, we try to connect, optimize and articulate everything.

The development of the data centric approach is at the core of my profession. This means that we have to reconsider working methods in order to redefine the information flow rules at multiple data levels. This collective effort requires the Project, the Process and the Engineering, the three branches of Technip, to work with one another. We aim at giving a new structure to the data flow.

What do you like most about your job ? What gets you out of bed every morning ?

I used to work in development, but now what I do, and love doing, is the communicative element since I interact with different speakers. I sometimes get into meetings focusing on topics or processes that I am not familiar with. Trades being diversified, one can end up in situations where they have to figure everything out and come up with the proper solutions. But when a project is set up, one gets a great satisfaction out of it. One more valuable thing that I like is the client’s appreciation toward the expert.

What are your main challenges and professional projects to come ?

As for now, I am very pleased with my position and missions. It is quite hard to tell where one will be in the coming years. This profession is pretty recent and what we do with it will transform it as it is a continuous improvement process. If I really enjoy it, I could become a project engineer, meaning that I would be a mentor, monitoring KPIs, supervising a whole project, all along with the client dimension.

How did you know about Orinox and what attracted you to join this company ?

Before applying, I made research on the company and I remember coming across a news that made me laugh for it nicknamed the company « Google of Châteaubriand ». When the HR department contacted me, I told them about this news and they appreciated it for it proved that I had taken a look at what the company did. What also made me want to join the team is the passion and motivation Maxime Fourreau has.

How would you describe Orinox in 3 words ?

Orinox is a young company, promoting technical skills and being very human through the closeness of its teams. I was also lucky to have a great and caring manager in the person of Alexandre Henneront.

What would you advise to Orinox applicants ?

My job is quite specific for I made it through my own skills. Three things are to be kept in mind : have a professional project of one’s own, go forward and always be determined. Every Orinox collaborator who made a professional change wanted it and they reached their goals thanks to their expertise. Nothing is impossible if one is motivated, knows what they want to be and has the help of the right people.

Other than your job at Technip, what are your hobbies and passions ?

I have been dancing for years now and when I graduated, I came to like improvisational theater. It supports my job on a daily basis since it helps me in situations where decision-making and quick-communication are required.

Thanks to Haythem Kamoun for giving us an insight on the Methods and Data Engineer position and on his everyday life. We wish him success at Orinox !
